My feet have been busy...

My feet have been very busy these days...

In February I flew out to San Jose for An Artful Journey

where I took a class with Katie Kendrick (still swooning!)

and created alongside some amazing women.

I walked amongst the redwoods

in total awe of their beauty

and all of the magical things that grew around them.

Before I left left home,

this was what I was working on.
This was how I was painting.

While under the special care of Katie

I created this

and this.

Of course, I couldn't fly all the way out to San Jose
and not spend a few days in the area.

So my sister-in-law, and usual post-retreat traveller,
met me in San Fransisco where we

had congee for breakfast

saw Alcatraz from the Golden Gate Bridge

hit, what seemed like, every store in Chinatown

and saw some street poetry.

When I got back home
it was Spring Breakfor my kids.
So we headed to the beach for a few days

of sand play, shell collecting and fishing,

and then threw in a little SXSW fun

to round out the break.

Last week we headed to the river

for Easter weekend.

I kayaked for the first time.

My daughter dubbed our kayak
'Boat Optimism'
because there was no badmouthing the paddlers
and we knew we would get there eventually.

It's good to have my feet planted back home for awhile.

Since coming back home from AAJ
I've been working on a few things.

I have committed to participating in the WEST Austin Studio Tour at the end of the month.
I'm feeling LOTS of anxiety about this,
but also excitement.
It's a new step.
A big step.

I'm trying to just keep creating.
Some things I like.
Some things I don't.

But all along the way, I'm trying the most to just listen.
And when I start to question the voice inside
I hear Katie saying "I just like this" or
"I just want to put this paper here/or paint this face this way. And I don't know why."

For that alone, I can't thank you enough Katie.

I listened, I played, I won...

I listened...

Last week I got this wonderful, red jawbone speaker for my Birthday (Thanks Ma!). I have been carrying it around the house with me ever since, listening to podcasts. I am a podcast junkie. One of my current favorites is Art and Soul Radio with Lesley Riley. Last Friday, while piddling around the house, cleaning, I listened to Susan Tuttle and Christy Hydeck talk about all kinds of great things including their new book, Photo Craft. I knew I had to get a copy when Susan talked about a technique in the book on how to make Polaroids without breaking the bank to buy Polaroid film. As they talked, I pulled out my phone finding them on Instagram and searching their 'can't live without' apps.

I played...

One of the most inspiring techniques I learned from Susan and Christy was the idea of using more than one app to edit photos on my phone (and then even uploading them to my computer for further editing in Photoshop). I had always thought it was one photo, one app. Or just use Hipstamatic, which I LOVE, but I'm less in control of the results and have to shoot the same thing over and over to get the results I'm looking for. That night, I crawled into bed, took a picture of the view from my pillow and played with a couple of my newly purchased apps.

 I won...

The next day I saw that Lesley was giving away a copy of Photo Craft. Ooh, just look at that yummy cover! I knew i had to get me one. So I submitted my comment and I won! My beautiful copy of Photo Craft arrived in the mail yesterday! I can't wait to curl up this weekend and absorb me some yummy photography.

I can't thank you enough Lesley. You are a truly generous soul.

listen = silent

I started this little project, of sorts.

I started it with the hope to reconnect.
To listen.
To myself and the world around me.

The other day my daughter brought it to my attention that
the words listen and silent have the same letters.

I think she read it in the book she was reading.

Listen is my word for 2013.

So now, whenever I ask myself "Are you listening?"
I am reminded of how important it is to get silent.

Today....

Hoping that it all goes well today.

No glips or beeps.

No crazy twists or turns.

Hoping the best comes out in people today.

It's been a long, ugly road.

It's time to get back in touch with the things that are important to our country and it's people.

Excited about Montage...

A year and a half ago I took the most wonderful photography class with Vivianne McMaster. I cannot say enough about Vivianne and her fabulous classes.

I have had my eye on her film class, Montage, waiting for the right time to take it.

This week I jumped.

Montage starts tomorrow.

I am SOOOO excited about this class!

Here is a wonderful video I just saw. Jen Gray's words hit home and
I am in love with her playfulness (and her shoes!!)

Can't wait to get started. So much inspiration here.

Best Wishes,
Janna

Trying something new today...

Today I listened and...

I tried something new...
Thai Bubble Tea.

I know I'm WAY behind on the the bubble tea craze,
but this tea also came with a new to me restaurant,
a bowl of my favorite soup-
Vietnamese Pho
and
a lunch date with my man.

May your Halloween be filled with candy, spooks and laughter.
Happy Halloween!!
