Small Steps...20 Minutes a Day Challenge
I've been taking Kate Swoboda's wonderful new e-class Across Mediums. Each day we are given a new assignment that builds on the previous day. It's been so freeing to learn to let go of control and surrender to the process, although I have to admit that I have a lot more control to let go of and a lot more surrendering to do. Each day we are only asked to spend 20 minutes on each assignment. With that idea in mind, Kate posted a link to the 20 Minutes a Day Challenge.
When I took the Artist's Way last fall one of the biggest lessons for me was the importance of small steps in getting things done, especially those things that seem insurmountable. I have tried to incorporate the idea of Small Steps into my life. It works really well with my creative projects and crock pot cooking, but there is still room for more small steps.
Reading Michael's blog and suggestions has really had me thinking about what one thing would I like to focus on for this challenge. Hmmm, a specific creative project, filling a sketch journal, blogging, finishing my February Ladies Sweater. There's also the Illustration Friday route...so a project a week based on that week's word.
Although the challenge is suggested to be something that one focus on for oneself, i have also found myself thinking about 20 minutes a day with the kids...each kid individually.
Yesterday I was flipping through a magazine and read a blurb from Claudine Hellmuth about finding one's style. Her recommendation...make A LOT of art, and while doing this, don't look at the work of others. So now I'm tossing around the thought of X number of pieces in X amount of time being my challenge. So how many pieces are feasible in 20 minutes a day? But that just feels like my need to control popping in again to set constraints. I'm thinking of going with the sketchbook and see what else will follow. Who knows, maybe I'll actually get the FLS done in time to wear next fall.

Kelly Rae...Me
Way back when...last August...on my first artist date for The Artist's Way course I was taking, I came across Taking Flight by Kelly Rae Roberts. I was totally inspired by her work and willingness to show how she created her pieces, as well as the writings. It fit in perfectly with The Artist's Way. I decided to take on the projects and put all of those art supplies I was collecting to good use. Here's my progress...
CHAPTER ONE:
I loved using the old book covers to make a new book. My first face...she looks really serious and tight-lipped. Guess that reflected my intense concentration.
CHAPTER TWO:
I never knew you could paint and bake sculpey clay making it in to a solid form.
CHAPTER THREE:
I loved working with the clay so much I used it here again along with the new technique of working with the plaster and foam.
CHAPTER FOUR: Sssh! This one is a secret. I made it for my daughter for her birthday. It was another cool altered-old-book project.
CHAPTER FIVE:
Wish I had more texture here. I smoothed the tissue paper out too much. Was fun to incorporate the old photo.
I have one more project left and it's working with wax...something I'm really excited to learn about. Everything I have done in this book has been so much fun. One of the biggest obstacles for me was the idea of 'copying' someone else's work/style. I found that I had to sit with a project for awhile in order to figure out how to make it more mine...so that I could be more comfortable with it.

Lovin' life
I'm getting the hang of the whole crock-pot cookin' thing. Now to get into the habit of blogging. I often find that when I have the time, when everyone is quietly entertained, they are all on my computer! And not wanting to disrupt the peace I choose to journal, or read. Right now, I'm enjoying the humor in watching my little guys trying to excavate things from behind the sofa. They have a flashlight and a stick. One (the 4 year old) was just trying to shove the other (the 2 year old) between the wall and the sofa to retrieve something that they keep putting back there. I love that they are working together, happily. Minestrone soup is cooking in the crock and I have been reading posts to the forum on this new 2 week e-class I am taking. Life is good.
